“Let us therefore set out whole-heartedly, leaving aside our many distractions and exert ourselves in this single purpose, before we realize too late the swift and unstoppable flight of time and are left behind. As each day arises, welcome it as the very best day of all, and make it your own possession. We must seize what flees.”
SENECA, MORAL LETTERS, 108.27b-28a
Holy cow, what a powerful quote. I absolutely love this one. This might be my absolute favorite quote in the whole book.
“Let us therefore set out whole-heartedly” — meaning let’s do this right away, with boldness. No dilly-dallying, no sitting around and planning. Let’s move forward with a brave heart and clear eyes.
“As each day arises, welcome it as the very best day of all” — as if today is a bonus day that you weren’t expecting! We must remind ourselves that time is fleeting and our existence is brief. We must make the most of it.
Seize the day! Carpe diem. Grab every moment as it passes by. Time is at this moment flowing down the river, never to be recaptured. The sands of your life are falling through the hourglass. Take ahold of this day and “make it your own”.
And above all, remember that you could leave life right now. You are mortal, so bear that in mind: memento mori. So make sure to grab today and LIVE.
