Kindness is Invincible

“Kindness is invincible, but only when it’s sincere, with no hypocrisy or faking. For what can even the most malicious person do if you keep showing kindness and, if given the chance, you gently point out where they went wrong — right as they are trying to harm you?”

MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 11.18.5.9a

If you react with kindness, nobody can defeat you. It’s a secret tool, but only when you use it in a genuine and honest way — “sincere, with no hypocrisy or faking” as Marcus states above. Which is not easy to do!

When you bring a pure heart, and are being kind from an honest and authentic place, that is overwhelming and a surprise to people who wish to hurt you. It is the surest way to overcome a bully. Show them real, genuine kindness — they are just a hurting human being, after all — and that will blow their mind and defuse whatever attack they are inflicting upon you.

If someone has it in for you, and just really wants to make your life miserable in some way, instead of responding with hatred back at them, try being kind instead. They might not deserve it, in fact they surely don’t. But that’s not why we do it. We aren’t nice only to people who deserve it. We’re kind because it’s the right thing to do, and everyone needs the benefit of the doubt sometimes.

By showing love where none was expected, you’ve immediately disarmed them. They won’t know how to react. They might just feel a spark of happiness in their heart (which you’ve planted). And you’ll feel better than if you’d reacted negatively, too — because kindness benefits you too.

And all because kindness is invincible. It’s a secret weapon — try it!
