Be a Good Person

“What is your vocation? To be a good person.”

MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 11.5

Today’s entry in The Daily Stoic is a short one, so I’ll keep this post brief and to the point too. And here’s what you should take away from the quote above: you have one freaking job, and it’s to be a good person.

That’s it. That is stoic philosophy in a nutshell.

Exactly how ‘good person’ is defined is relative; it depends on what is right for each person. But that is our mission and our duty and our obligation — to be a good person to the best of our ability, and do what we know to be right for us.

As I wrote a few days ago, we should strive to be a good person today, not tomorrow. And along our journey, we should replace our bad habits with good ones. And then we’ll find that we’ve stayed focused on what matters, and what’s important, and we’ll know it in our hearts and be contented.
