Love What You Do

“Love the humble art you have learned, and take rest in it. Pass through the remainder of your days as one who whole-heartedly entrusts all possessions to the gods, making yourself neither a tyrant nor a slave to any person.”

MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 4.31

Ryan Holiday in today’s chapter uses the example of famous stand-up comedians, and the fact that they often ply their trade at brick & mortar comedy clubs when they generally command a lot more money for their time making sitcoms or movies. Why do they do it?

Because they love their craft so much that they can’t not do perform in clubs. It’s not just about the money for them. They can’t help themselves. They just love stand up so much that they have to do it.

And that’s the point of today’s entry — find a way to absolutely love what you do. Make time for it, and focus on the love of your craft, whatever it may be. It doesn’t have to be glamorous like stand-up comedy, or hugely significant or impactful to lots of people. Your craft can be simple, just make sure to intentionally love it. Don’t think about the money, focus on the love instead.

The author put it well on the last line: “Love the craft, be a craftsman.”

(PS – this doesn’t mean you have to do arts & crafts, haha)
