You Are the Start-Up

“But what does Socrates say? ‘Just as one person delights in improving his farm, and another his horse, so I delight in attending to my own improvement day by day.'”

EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 3.5.14

Starting a business and trying to become a self-made entrepreneur is popular these days, especially with folks cooped up at home and workforce economics changing due to the pandemic. People work very hard at turning their passion projects into sustainable enterprises with the ultimate goal of becoming financially free and being their own boss.

But shouldn’t you work equally hard to build yourself up too, to improve yourself? You’re already the boss of yourself, so shouldn’t it be important to spend a large amount of focus on growing that “business”, the business of you? That’s the focus of today’s entry in The Daily Stoic.

We need to remember to spend time to also build our own self, not just our business. Actually, it’s more important to focus on self-improvement. Truly you can’t become a successful entrepreneur and build a business without self-inspection and constructive self-criticism, because building a business is hard and it requires a person to be at the top of their game! Very few of us start out at the top of our game, so we have to work at improving our self so that we can be effective in our entrepreneurial pursuit, whatever that may be.

Without a strong soul and strong mind, we’re not likely to succeed in starting our own business. Heck, that’s a large part of why I started reading The Daily Stoic and why I started Meditations by Billy — this is an outlet for me to explore my intentions and my aspirations, while journaling about what I learn and how to help myself grow. It sets me up for success in my other pursuits.

Not everyone sees the value in self-improvement. Some view it as a sign of weakness or something being wrong, to want to always be learning, as my friend does. But self-improvement is the key to growth in all areas of our lives, and that includes our business pursuits. It’s a requirement for entrepreneurial success, really! Be sure to make time for it.
