Use Reason to End Your Troubles

“You’ve endured countless troubles — all from not letting your ruling reason do the work it was made for — enough already!”

MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 9.26

All this worrying, all this fretting — leading to you pull out your hair, and drown in overwhelming anxiety — what has it gotten you? Have you made bad decisions or essentially created troubles for yourself this way, as a result of these out-of-control emotions? I know I have. And my parents certainly seem to jump to fear-based conclusions pretty often.

Sure, you can let your mind run wild. You can let it stress about things that don’t deserve your mental bandwidth — scary scenarios that are unlikely to ever come true. You can let your emotions run away with themselves, and cause you endless amounts of heartache and angst. Perhaps you’ve already done this countless times in your life, and are likely to even do it again in the near future…

But why? Why not let your mind do the work for it was intended — to give you reasoned choice and calm control of your faculties? Your mind has the perfectly-suited ability to help you identify what deserves more thought, and what should be let go. Why not use that power, which already exists waiting for you to tap into it?

Imagine all your self-created troubles melting away, simply because you let them, by setting aside the situation. That’s the power of stoicism, and the power of what you’ve been studying and learning. The power to do this is in your mind, just waiting for you to activate it. End your troubles, using the reasoned choice of a Stoic!
