Everything Changes, Always

“The universe is change. Life is opinion.”

MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 4.3.4b

Today’s quote in The Daily Stoic is brief but powerful. Marcus Aurelius reminds us that by its very nature, the universe is always changing, and that your perspective matters a great deal to how you feel about things.

Author Ryan Holiday also uses examples of the ship of Theseus, a shrine in Japan, and the US Senate to drive home the point that everything changes, always.

Change isn’t just a force, something that happens to the universe. The universe is change, by definition. The universe is always in flux, always evolving. Change is the constant state of everything, and it’s how the universe continues to have meaning. It’s often been said that time is the 4th dimension — in that case, change represents all the dimensions in motion.

“The only constant is change,” goes the old saying. Therefore, remember that it need not be something that we fear. Change isn’t good or bad, it just is.
