Review Each Day

“I will keep constant watch over myself and — most usefully — will put each day up for review. For this is what makes us evil — that none of us looks back upon our own lives. We reflect upon only that which we are about to do. And yet our plans for the future descend from the past.

SENECA, MORAL LETTERS, 83.2

We talked yesterday about keeping a morning ritual to set yourself up for success in the day ahead.

It is just as important to review each day after it happens. Whether you do this in the evening or the next morning like I do, it’s very important that we have a good hard look at what transpired each day, and how we responded.

When you review the day, note what you did and how you felt. Consider what went well, and what could be done better next time. Don’t beat yourself up, of course — you’re only human. This is not a time for self-flagellation, but it is a time for introspection and honesty. Write down what you’d like to improve.

Repeat the stoic principles to yourself. Author Ryan Holiday points out that the simple act of reviewing these principles is like “a prayer or hymn.” It helps to simply remind yourself, even if you already know them. That’s why I read The Daily Stoic each day, despite already understanding the basic concepts — daily review helps keep them strong in my mind, and recommits me to following the truth contained in the pages.

Reviewing each day is an important practice that builds upon itself and sets a foundation for personal growth. Give it a try!
