What’s on the Inside

“For philosophy doesn’t consist in outward display, but in taking heed to what is needed and being mindful of it.”

MUSONIUS RUFUS, LECTURES, 16.75.15-16

Philosophy isn’t something that you show to the external world. It’s not about giving off an aura of intelligence or wisdom. It’s not about trying to impress people. It’s not about appearing clever or ‘deep’.

When you study the wisdom of the ancients, it’s entirely for you alone — your own personal growth. Stoics keep things very simple in staying focused on their own search for understanding of what is good and right behavior in this world.

Philosophy is not about an outward display, it’s about what’s on the inside. Your character is what matters.

We have to be different where it counts — not in flashy personas or grand ways of speaking, not in broadcasting our opinions loudly or judging other people, but focused on ourselves.

Staying down to earth, instead of strutting around.
